How to Press DTF Transfers: Temperature, Time and Step-by-Step Guide

dtf

Quick answer: Press DTF transfers at 320°F (160°C) with medium pressure for 8–10 seconds. Peel instant peel film right away, or cold peel film once it is cool to the touch, then press again for 8–10 seconds under parchment paper.

Pressing DTF transfers takes about a minute once you know the steps. This guide uses the same settings we give customers for transfers printed at our Burnaby shop, so you can get a soft, durable print the first time.

What you need

  • A heat press (a household iron cannot apply even enough heat and pressure)
  • Your DTF transfer, trimmed with a small border around the design
  • Parchment paper or a Teflon sheet
  • A lint roller

DTF transfers are forgiving: a little more heat, pressure or time, within reason, will not damage them. Too little heat or pressure is the most common reason a print lifts.

Step by step

  1. Prep the garment. Lint-roll it and press it for a few seconds to remove wrinkles and moisture.
  2. Position the transfer. Take your time to line it up where you want it, with the printed side facing down onto the fabric.
  3. Press. Close the press at 320°F / 160°C with medium pressure for 8 to 10 seconds.
  4. Peel. For instant peel transfers, peel while hot. For cold peel transfers, let the transfer rest until it is cool to the touch. Lift from one corner and peel back gently.
  5. Finish. Cover the design with parchment paper or a single layer of T-shirt fabric and press again for 8 to 10 seconds. This softens the print, improves durability and removes shine.

Troubleshooting

  • Edges lifting when you peel: lay the film back down and press again for a few more seconds with firm pressure. For cold peel film, make sure it has fully cooled.
  • Uneven print near seams or zippers: use a pressing pillow or pad so the press makes even contact with the design.
  • Print looks shiny: do the finishing press with parchment paper or fabric on top.

Washing and care

  • Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash.
  • Wash inside out in cold or warm water on a gentle cycle.
  • Tumble dry on low or hang to dry.
  • Do not use bleach, and do not iron directly on the print.

Frequently asked questions

What temperature do you press DTF transfers at?

Press our DTF transfers at 320°F (160°C) with medium pressure for 8 to 10 seconds, then do a short finishing press with parchment paper on top.

Can I use a household iron for DTF transfers?

We recommend a heat press. An iron cannot apply even heat and pressure across the whole design, which often leads to lifting edges.

Why is my DTF transfer peeling off?

Usually the press was too cool, too short or too light, or cold peel film was peeled before it cooled. Re-cover the design and press again with firm pressure.

When can I wash a shirt with a DTF transfer?

Wait at least 24 hours, then wash inside out on a gentle cycle and tumble dry on low or hang to dry.
