Quick answer: Hot (instant) peel DTF film is peeled right after pressing and suits fast, high-volume work. Cold peel film is peeled once cool to the touch, usually gives a matte finish and suits fine detail. Both press at 320°F (160°C) for 8–10 seconds.
Every DTF transfer is pressed the same way, but the film it is printed on decides when you peel. Peel at the wrong moment and the ink can lift with the film. Here is how hot peel and cold peel DTF transfers differ, and how to choose between them.

What is a hot peel DTF transfer?
Hot peel (also called instant or warm peel) film releases the design as soon as the press opens. You can peel it straight away, which makes it the faster option when you are pressing a lot of garments. Our DTF gang sheet builder prints on instant peel film.
What is a cold peel DTF transfer?
Cold peel film holds onto the ink until it cools. After pressing, let the transfer sit until it is cool to the touch, then peel. Many decorators prefer cold peel for fine lines, small text and textured fabrics, and it usually gives a matte finish. You can order it as DTF transfers (cold peel).
Side-by-side comparison
| Hot / instant peel | Cold peel | |
|---|---|---|
| When to peel | Right after pressing | Once cool to the touch |
| Typical finish | Smooth, slight sheen before the finishing press | Matte |
| Best for | Speed and larger runs | Fine detail, small text, textured fabric |
| Press settings | 320°F / 160°C, 8 to 10 seconds, medium pressure | |
| Finishing press | 8 to 10 seconds with parchment paper or fabric on top | |
How to tell which one you have
Check your order or the product name first. If you are unsure, test-press one design and try lifting a corner while it is hot. If the ink starts to lift with the film, lay it back down, re-press for a few seconds and let it cool fully before peeling.
Which should you choose?
- Choose hot peel if you are pressing many shirts in a row and want to move quickly.
- Choose cold peel if your artwork has thin lines or small lettering, or you are pressing onto textured fabric.
- Either way, finish with a second press under parchment paper for a softer feel and better durability.
Frequently asked questions
Can I peel a cold peel transfer while it is hot?
No. Peeling cold peel film early can pull ink away from the garment. Wait until it is cool to the touch.
Do hot peel and cold peel transfers use different press settings?
Not for our transfers. Both press at 320°F (160°C) with medium pressure for 8 to 10 seconds. Only the peel timing changes.
Is cold peel more durable?
Both last well when pressed correctly. Good pressure, the right temperature and the finishing press matter more than the peel type.
