Die-Cut vs Kiss-Cut Stickers: How to Choose and Apply Vinyl Stickers

Holographic Vinyl Stickers (Die-Cut)

Quick answer: Die-cut stickers are cut through the vinyl and backing to the exact shape of the design. Kiss-cut stickers are cut through the vinyl only, leaving a larger backing. To apply any vinyl sticker, clean the surface with rubbing alcohol, let it dry, press from the centre outward and give the adhesive 24 hours to bond.

Custom stickers are one of the cheapest ways to put your brand on packaging, laptops, water bottles and windows. Choosing the right type, and applying it properly, makes the difference between a sticker that lasts and one that peels at the corners within a week. This guide explains the main sticker options and how to apply them.

Die-cut vs kiss-cut: what is the difference?

Die-cut vs kiss-cut stickers: die-cut is cut through the vinyl and backing, kiss-cut is cut through the vinyl only on a larger backing
Once peeled, both are the same sticker. The difference is the backing.

Both types follow the outline of your design. The difference is how deep the blade goes.

  • Die-cut: the cut goes through both the vinyl and the paper backing, so each sticker comes out in its own shape. Great for handing out, selling individually and premium-looking giveaways.
  • Kiss-cut: the cut goes through the vinyl only, so the sticker peels off a larger backing. Easier to peel, protects delicate edges, and is fast to apply when stickers come on a roll for packaging and labelling.

Once you peel them off, die-cut and kiss-cut stickers look and perform the same.

Laminated or not laminated?

A laminate is a clear protective layer over the printed vinyl. It adds protection against scratches, moisture and sun fading, and gives a smooth finish.

  • Choose laminated for anything that gets handled, washed or left outside: water bottles, tumblers, laptops, toolboxes, cars and outdoor signage.
  • Unlaminated can be fine for short-term or indoor uses, such as product packaging, mailers, labels and event giveaways.

Our stickers come in 2, 3, 4 and 5 inch sizes, in quantities from small runs to 1,000 or more.

What size sticker do you need?

  • 2 inches: packaging seals, small labels, freebies in orders.
  • 3 inches: the most popular all-round size for laptops, water bottles and giveaways.
  • 4 inches: bolder logos and designs with more detail or text.
  • 5 inches: statement stickers for coolers, toolboxes, windows and cases.

If your design has small text, size up so it stays readable.

How to apply a vinyl sticker

Peel, position and smooth from the centre out.
  1. Clean the surface. Wipe the area with rubbing alcohol and a microfibre cloth. Invisible finger oils, dust, car wax and window cleaners leave a residue that stops the adhesive from bonding. Let it dry completely.
  2. Peel and position. Peel the sticker from its backing, holding it by the edges so you do not touch the adhesive. Hover it over the surface to line it up before it touches.
  3. Press out the air. For small stickers, press firmly from the centre outward with your thumb. For larger decals, touch one edge down first, then use a squeegee or credit card to smooth the rest in one direction to push out air bubbles.
  4. Let it bond. Vinyl adhesive keeps getting stronger after you apply it. Avoid washing, soaking or scrubbing for at least 24 hours.

Tips for a sticker that lasts

  • Apply in mild conditions. Room temperature is ideal. On a cold surface the adhesive cannot flow and bond properly, so avoid applying outside in freezing weather.
  • Choose smooth surfaces. Stickers stick best to smooth, flat or gently curved surfaces such as glass, metal, painted surfaces and hard plastic. Rough, textured, dusty or oily surfaces do not hold well.
  • Watch the edges. Corners and edges are where peeling starts. Press them down firmly, and avoid placing stickers where they will be rubbed constantly.
  • Fixing a bubble: push small bubbles to the nearest edge. If one is stuck in the middle, prick it with a fine pin and press the air out.
  • Washing: hand-washing is gentlest on stickered bottles and mugs, even with laminated stickers.

Stickers vs UV DTF decals

Vinyl stickers have a visible edge and a backing layer. UV DTF transfers leave only the design behind with no background, which gives a printed-on look on glass and tumblers. Choose stickers when you want something affordable that is easy to hand out or sell. Choose UV DTF when you want a no-border, premium finish on hard goods.

Preparing your sticker artwork

  • Send high-resolution artwork at 300 DPI at the final size.
  • Use a transparent PNG or vector file so the cut line follows your design, not a box.
  • Keep text and thin lines away from the very edge of the design.
  • Very bright screen colours can print slightly differently. See our guide to preparing artwork and RGB vs CMYK.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between die-cut and kiss-cut stickers?

Die-cut stickers are cut through the vinyl and backing to the shape of the design. Kiss-cut stickers are cut through the vinyl only, so they peel off a larger backing. Once applied, they look the same.

Are vinyl stickers waterproof?

Vinyl itself resists water, and laminated stickers add extra protection against moisture, scratches and fading. For the longest life on bottles and mugs, choose laminated stickers and hand-wash.

How do I apply a sticker without bubbles?

Clean the surface, then press from the centre outward. For large decals, start at one edge and smooth across with a squeegee or credit card.

How long should I wait before washing a stickered item?

Wait at least 24 hours so the adhesive can bond fully.

What surfaces do vinyl stickers stick to?

Smooth, clean surfaces such as glass, metal, painted surfaces and hard plastic. Rough or textured surfaces do not hold well.

What sticker size is most popular?

3 inches is the most common all-round size for laptops, bottles and giveaways.
